Last night's musical emergency was based on a relatively unknown Grimm Brothers' story called "The Devil and the Three Golden Hairs", and in one scene, Our Hero goes to Hell to see the Devil. The Devil, it turns out, isn't home, but his kindly and helpful grandmother is. This song is my attempt to explore the oddity of the Devil living at home with his kindly and helpful grandmother.

Am C I remember like it was yesterday Dm E The day my daughter ran away Am C With that no-good man from down the road Dm E Her standards always were so low Am C Nine months on, she was back again Dm E Abandoned by her so-called man Am C In her arms an infant son Dm E I turned my back a moment Am C She was gone Dm E And I sang the boy this song... F G Wherever your desires may lead you C Am Whatever you may want to do F G You have everything you need to C Am Make it all come true for you F G Wherever your desires may take you C Am Whatever you may want to be F Dm G Don't ever let a thing stand in between F Am C Dm E You and your dream I raised the boy, he grew strong and bright I swore this time I'd do it right I always told him, raise your sights Seek your dreams with all your might If you want something, go out and take it You can do it, I know you'll make it You can always win the fight Life is just an apple Take a bite And I sang the song each night... CHORUS I think it was at the age of ten He started tempting all his friends And by the time the boy was twelve He'd set his sights on ruling Hell He cursed the livestock, poisoned wells Gathered souls to buy and sell He's drowned the world with sin and vice And it's all thanks to Granny's Good advice I forgot to say be nice CHORUS
